Since April 1, topping up Apple ID from a mobile phone balance stopped working in Russia. But there is a working method through a Belarusian virtual card called Crypto Status from StatusBank, which is issued on the WHITEBIRD crypto platform in a couple of minutes and covers the issue with App Store, iCloud, Telegram Premium, and subscriptions to Western services. Let’s break down how it works, how much it costs, and what pitfalls await Russians.

What Is the Crypto Status Card

This is a virtual Mastercard issued by Belarusian StatusBank in partnership with the legal crypto platform WHITEBIRD. The main feature is that it can be obtained entirely online, without visiting an office or traveling to Belarus. All you need is a passport, a phone, and a couple of minutes for verification.

The card can be opened in three currencies: BYN, USD, and RUB. For topping up Apple ID, the dollar option is the most interesting — it’s more stable and accepted by foreign services without issues. Here’s how the card is issued:

  1. Register on WhiteBird and complete identity verification;
  2. Go to your account and select the “Payment Methods” section;
  3. What is the Crypto Status card. Issue the card in this section. Photo.

  4. Next to “Crypto Status Card,” click “Issue Card” and follow the on-screen instructions.

How to Add the Card to Apple ID

An important point right away: a Belarusian card won’t work with a Russian-region Apple ID. So here’s what you need to do:

  • Change the Apple ID region to Belarus: your Apple account — “Content & Purchases” — “Country or Region”
  • How to add the card to Apple ID. Change the region to Belarus and link your crypto card. Photo.

  • Go to “Settings” — “Payment & Shipping” — “Add Payment Method”
  • Enter a Belarusian billing address

After that, the card links without any hassle and works for all the usual scenarios: purchasing apps, subscriptions, iCloud+, Apple Music, Telegram Premium, ChatGPT Plus, and other services that are officially unavailable in Russia.

How Much Does the Crypto Status Card Cost

This is where it gets interesting. Issuance terms depend on whether you already have a Crypto Status card:

  • If you are a Russian citizen and already have a Crypto Status card — the dollar card is issued for free
  • If you don’t have a card yet — you’ll need to open your first Crypto Status Mastercard in BYN. For non-residents, this costs 200 BYN, approximately 5,300 ₽ at the current exchange rate. The amount is debited automatically upon the first top-up
  • If you want a physical card (VISA Gold or Mastercard Standard) — add 100 BYN, approximately 2,600 ₽. Delivery works across Russia and Belarus, and the order is placed through the StatusBank 2.0 app

So the minimum entry threshold for a new customer is about 5,300 ₽ as a one-time payment. After that, the card works with no monthly fees.

How to Top Up the Crypto Status Card from Russia

There are several methods: the first and most important is transferring cryptocurrency from your WhiteBird account. Simply withdraw funds from your internal account to the Crypto Status card and pay with it. Another convenient option is a transfer via SBP (Fast Payment System): it’s supported by all Russian banks. Money arrives instantly, and the commission depends on the sending bank.

Transfers by bank details (IBAN) are also available. The crediting speed and commission are visible right in the app when sending. StatusBank’s own commission for crediting is 0.6% of the amount, which is noticeably more reasonable than most gray-market schemes with gift cards. After topping up, the funds are immediately available for payments in the App Store and other services.

Is It Worth Topping Up Apple ID with Cryptocurrency

If you regularly pay for subscriptions in the App Store, Telegram Premium, iCloud+, or foreign services like ChatGPT and Adobe — the method works and is one of the most convenient available today. The card is legal, issued by a real bank, links to Apple ID natively, and doesn’t require intermediaries.

The main downside is the need to change your Apple ID region to Belarus. This means you won’t be able to make purchases in the Russian App Store through this account, and for everyday tasks many people keep two accounts: a primary Russian one and a “foreign” one with a Belarusian region for paid subscriptions.

If you pay for Apple services rarely — it’s easier to get by with gift codes through Sber. But if the amounts add up regularly, Crypto Status pays for itself in just a couple of months and eliminates the headache of finding working payment methods.
