Russia has taken a step closer to defeating pet allergies
Allergies to cats and dogs are one of the most frustrating problems for animal lovers. In such cases, our bodies literally resist the very thing we want most. After all, it has been scientifically proven that cats and dogs support us and even help fight depression. Fortunately, Russian scientists are developing allergy vaccines that could permanently solve the problem for millions of people.
Development of a Vaccine Against Pet Allergies
According to RIA Novosti, we’re talking not about one drug, but two at once. A vaccine against cat allergies is already awaiting clinical trials, while a vaccine against dog allergies is in active development. The announcement was timed to coincide with World Allergy Day, which is observed on July 8.
It’s important to understand that this is still the development and trial preparation stage, not a finished medication available at the pharmacy. Clinical trials are a mandatory phase where the drug’s safety and effectiveness for humans are tested. Until that point, it’s too early to talk about widespread use.
Why Pet Allergies Occur
Many people think that fur is to blame. In reality, allergies are caused by special allergen proteins found in the animal’s saliva, skin, and secretions. Fur simply carries these proteins around the home, settling on furniture and clothing.
When an allergen enters the body of a person prone to allergies, the immune system treats it as a threat and activates its defenses — much like a security guard reacting to a harmless visitor as if they were a robber. This leads to a runny nose, itching, watery eyes, and sneezing fits.
Regular allergy medications simply suppress these symptoms. A vaccine, on the other hand, aims to train the immune system to react more calmly to the irritant.
Allergy Testing for Pet Allergies
Alongside the vaccines, the laboratory has created a diagnostic test system called “AllergoChip RF”. It detects sensitivity to more than 120 allergens in a single test. It works like a comprehensive screening panel: instead of guessing what exactly a person is reacting to, the doctor gets a detailed map of their individual sensitivities.
The institution conducted patient profiling across different regions of Russia for the first time in the country. In simpler terms, specialists collected data on which specific allergens most commonly affect residents of particular areas.
This is important because allergens in Moscow, southern Russia, or Siberia can differ. An accurate picture allows doctors to skip unnecessary tests and immediately understand what a specific person is dealing with.
How to Make Allergy Tests More Affordable
The most practical part of the project concerns cost and accessibility. An allergy test is expensive and excessive for most people. However, if it’s known in advance which allergens are actually present in a specific region, the panel can be reduced. Thanks to profiling, chips can be made for not 120, but, for example, 20 allergens. This would make the product cheaper and accessible in any corner of the country. The logic is simple: less unnecessary testing — lower price — wider coverage.
This approach is especially useful in areas without large laboratories and specialized centers. A compact and affordable test is easier to deliver to small towns and install in regular clinics.

For millions of people, a pet allergy means choosing between health and a beloved animal. The emergence of domestic vaccines potentially offers a third option — not giving up a cat or dog while also not suffering from symptoms.
But it’s important to stay realistic here. The cat allergy vaccine is only preparing for clinical trials, and the dog allergy drug is still in development. No specific timeline for pharmacy availability was mentioned in the announcement, and mandatory testing must be completed before real-world use.
If the Russian scientists’ developments reach the finish line, it will be a significant step forward. Pet allergies will no longer be a life sentence for those who can’t imagine life without a pet. For now, it’s worth following the clinical trial results, as they will show just how effective and safe the vaccines prove to be in practice.
