What dreams people have around the world and why it happens.

The most common dream in the world involves snakes — at least, judging by what people type into search engines. This conclusion was reached by the team behind the British project Mornings.co.uk, which analyzed Google queries about dreams across different countries. And you know what’s the best part about this data? You’re definitely not the only person who regularly dreams about their teeth falling out. Scientists still debate why we dream at all, but dream plots often turn out to be surprisingly similar among people from different countries.

Snakes Top the Global Dream Rankings

If you gather data from around the world, people most frequently search for the meaning of dreams about snakes. The numbers are impressive: in Brazil, snake-related queries are entered about 352,000 times a month, and in Turkey — 214,000 times. The logic seems obvious: where venomous snakes live, they lead the dream rankings. The brain remembers the real threat and serves it up at night. But that turned out not to be the case.

In the UK, a bite from a local snake would at worst cause mild irritation — there are virtually no reptiles truly dangerous to humans there. You’d think, where would snakes come from in British dreams? But they still took second place in the number of search queries.

This breaks the simple explanation of “you dream about what you fear in real life.” It seems the snake is something deeper, an almost universal image that troubles people regardless of whether they live near vipers or not. Perhaps it’s an echo of an ancient evolutionary fear of snakes, embedded in us since the times when encountering a snake could genuinely end badly.

The Dream About Teeth Falling Out: Where It Came From and What It Might Mean

Next in the rankings is a completely different plot — a dream about teeth falling out. In the US, people search for the meaning of this dream about 81,000 times a month. Amusingly, the British, despite the stereotype about bad teeth, worry about them in their dreams no less than anyone else.

The most surprising thing is that this dream is at least nearly two thousand years old. Written mentions of teeth falling out in dreams date back to the 2nd century AD. For centuries, this dream was interpreted as a harbinger of relatives’ death — such a popular explanation that Freud himself mentioned it, only to immediately reject it. In the 1960s, a calmer version emerged: the dream about teeth is linked to the fear of aging.

Most such interpretations are pure pseudoscience, but there was also a scientific approach. In a small 1984 study published in the journal Psychological Reports, psychologists compared those who dream about teeth with those who dream about, say, flying. The result was intriguing:

  • people who dreamed about teeth falling out turned out to be noticeably more anxious and depressed
  • they had lower life satisfaction
  • they more often felt they had no control over what was happening and felt helpless

The researchers found that people who had this dream were no more worried about aging than other participants, meaning that explanation wasn’t quite right.

A Simple Scientific Explanation for Dreams Instead of Mysticism

The authors of that study cautiously suggested that the dream about losing teeth might be an ancient echo from times when losing your teeth meant a real threat to survival: it became difficult to eat and defend yourself. And when a person today feels helpless or loses control of a situation, the brain seemingly pulls out this archaic image.

But there’s another explanation, a rather simple one. Perhaps teeth appear in the dreams of those who worry about them during the day: there’s a theory that dreams continue our daytime concerns.

Top 10 Dreams Around the World

The list also includes other recognizable plots: vacations, exes, hair, flies, pregnancy and childbirth, wedding dresses, sex, as well as threats like being chased, bears, fire, and spiders.

This was not a rigorous scientific study of dreams but an analysis of search queries. It merely shows which dream interpretations people rush to look up on the internet. But even in that, there’s value: we suddenly see that across thousands of kilometers, different cultures are united by the same nighttime plots — a snake in the grass and suddenly falling teeth. And if you’ve dreamed about any of this, now you know for sure that you’re not alone.
