
Students broke a record by building a giant house-sized paper airplane
Students created the largest paper airplane, breaking a record that had remained unbeaten for over a decade. Building a giant flying craft requires complex engineering calculations, since ordinary paper at such dimensions instantly loses rigidity and collapses under its own weight.

A team of enthusiasts managed to create a paper airplane model of impressive dimensions. The wingspan of the paper airplane reached an incredible 19.8 meters, which is comparable to the width of a small apartment building.

Until this moment, the title of record holder belonged to the German Braunschweig Institute of Technology. Their achievement had remained the best in the world for a full 13 years. To surpass this result, the new record holders had to carefully consider the balance of the structure.

It might seem that creating a huge giant paper airplane is as simple as taking a large sheet of paper and folding it the usual way. However, the laws of aerodynamics work differently, and simply increasing the size leads to the model’s destruction.

- Increased mass: the larger the area of paper used, the heavier the entire structure becomes;
- Loss of rigidity: without additional reinforcement, enormous paper wings sag from the slightest change in air currents;
- Center of gravity shift: large-scale models behave completely differently in the air, requiring perfect balance for gliding.
That is precisely why the successful flight of a twenty-meter paper airplane is a serious achievement in the field of applied engineering.
