In the summer of 2026, amid rising prices and fuel shortages on the domestic market, Russia began purchasing gasoline from India to stabilize the situation at gas stations. The first tankers have already delivered tens of thousands of tons of fuel, which sounds like a lifesaver but raises legitimate concerns among drivers. Let’s examine whether this exotic fuel could harm your engine, why its composition hides an unexpected threat, and whether gasoline prices are likely to drop.

Why Gasoline Is Being Imported from India

This summer, Russian drivers faced an unpleasant reality: lines at gas stations, interruptions in the availability of needed fuel grades, and steadily climbing prices. The cause was scheduled and unscheduled maintenance at domestic oil refineries. To physically fill the gap in the market, the government decided to bring in external gasoline suppliers.

According to Forbes, at least two tankers have already been sent from India by sea, carrying a combined total of about 60,000 tons of gasoline. The figure seems impressive, but on the scale of the entire country, this volume covers less than one day of Russian demand, since at the peak of summer the country consumes up to 110,000 tons per day. That’s why imports from abroad are not a panacea but targeted assistance.

The most ironic thing about this situation is the fuel’s origin. India is massively buying crude Russian oil, processing it at its enormous refineries, and then the gasoline returns to Russia through international traders. In conditions of shortage, this is a completely normal global practice.

Environmental Class and Quality of Indian Gasoline

When many drivers hear the phrase Indian gasoline, they picture dirty, low-grade fuel for old mopeds. In reality, this is a myth. Since 2020, Indian refineries have transitioned to the strict BS-VI standard, which in terms of environmental performance is practically on par with modern Euro-5 fuel.

In high-quality Indian fuel, sulfur content is limited to minimal levels, making it perfectly suitable for modern turbocharged engines, catalytic converters, and sensitive oxygen sensors. The octane rating is also in good shape: equivalents of AI-92 and AI-95 are produced, as well as premium grades at the AI-100 level.

How Indian Gasoline Differs from Russian Gasoline

If Indian gasoline is so clean and high-quality, why can’t you just take it and pour it into a Russian car’s tank? The answer lies in India’s national environmental programs. According to Oil Capital, the country is actively promoting the E20 standard, meaning gasoline containing up to 20% ethanol.

Russian standards allow a maximum of 5% ethanol in automotive gasoline. Ethanol is excellent at boosting octane ratings, but it attracts moisture, making it dangerous for our climate and infrastructure.

High ethanol content in gasoline has several critical drawbacks:

  • Reduced power. Ethanol contains less energy, so fuel consumption on such gasoline increases by approximately 3–4%;
  • Risk of phase separation. With temperature fluctuations and prolonged storage at fuel depots, ethanol actively absorbs water. The mixture can separate into gasoline and a water-ethanol sludge at the bottom of the tank;
  • Wear on older engines. Fuel lines and pumps in vehicles manufactured more than 10–15 years ago are simply not designed to handle the aggressive effects of large amounts of ethanol.

Can You Tell If a Gas Station Has Indian Gasoline?

Fortunately, drivers don’t need to check every gas station with a laboratory test tube. No one will allow pure E20 standard gasoline into Russian pumps, as it would not pass certification under domestic GOST standards.

For the gasoline to reach retail sale, Indian refineries will produce special export batches with minimal ethanol content. Alternatively, within Russia such fuel will be blended with regular gasoline to safe proportions directly at distribution fuel depots.

An ordinary driver won’t even know that fuel produced on the shores of the Indian Ocean is sloshing around in their tank. There won’t be separate nozzles at gas stations with exotic names, because the fuel will undergo certification and merge into the general supply of familiar AI-92 and AI-95.

Will Gasoline Become Cheaper?

Unfortunately, Indian fuel will not lower gasoline prices. In India itself, a liter of gasoline costs more than in Russia — roughly 90–100 rubles in our currency. On top of that, you need to add the cost of chartering sea tankers, insurance, port transshipment, domestic rail delivery, excise taxes, and trader markups.

The government uses a special damping mechanism, paying importers the difference so that it is even profitable for them to bring gasoline into the country. The practical purpose of imports from India is not price dumping but a desperate attempt to prevent empty pumps at gas stations.

In the end, purchasing gasoline abroad is an emergency patch for the fuel market. It gives domestic oil refineries time to complete repairs and restore capacity. For the average motorist, the appearance of Indian gasoline simply means that fuel at gas stations will continue to be sold without interruptions — albeit at the same high prices.
