
Gray hair at an early age is not always a bad sign
Gray hair at 20 often causes panic and thoughts about premature aging of the body, but in reality things are quite different. In most cases, the issue lies not in biological age but in a localized malfunction, because hair follicles simply stop producing the coloring pigment. Let’s figure out what causes hair to lose its color so early, what crash diets have to do with it, and whether it’s possible to restore your hair’s original appearance.
What Determines a Person’s Hair Color
Located in the skin of our scalp are hair follicles — small sac-like structures from which hair grows. Inside each of these sacs, special cells called melanocytes are hard at work. Their main job is to produce melanin, which determines a person’s hair color.
While the hair is growing, these cells continuously saturate it with pigment. If melanin becomes scarce, the new section begins to grow in white. The hair itself remains healthy — only its appearance changes. The silvery shade we see in the mirror occurs due to the mixing of remaining pigment with the hair’s structure and unusual light refraction.
In medicine, there is no strict rule for when a person should start going gray, as it strongly depends on ethnicity. For people of European descent, graying before age 20 is considered early; for Asian descent — before 25; and for African descent — before 30. But a single white hair in your youth is not yet a cause for concern.
Why Gray Hairs Appear on the Head
Most often, the answer to this question should be sought not in a medical file but in a family photo album. It turns out that heredity is the most common cause of premature graying. If your parents or grandparents noticed their first white strands while studying at university, there is a high probability that your body is simply following the same genetic program.
Our genes, particularly the IRF4 gene, control many hidden processes. They determine how many melanocytes are present in the follicles, how long they will remain active, and how well they are protected from damage. When the genetic reserve of stem cells is depleted, pigment production stops, even though the person may be perfectly healthy.
Beyond genetics, harmful habits play a huge role. For example, tobacco smoke causes oxidative stress — cell damage by reactive oxygen species. Melanocytes are extremely sensitive to this kind of exposure, which is why smoking can dramatically accelerate their death and hasten the appearance of white strands.
How Severe Stress Leads to Gray Hair
The phrase “went gray from worry” was long considered an artistic exaggeration, but scientists have proven that this mechanism truly exists. When we are under severe stress, the sympathetic nervous system — responsible for the “fight or flight” response — activates. It is precisely at these moments that the body produces unpredictable reactions: the heart pounds, a ringing may sometimes appear in the ears, and nerve endings near hair follicles begin actively releasing norepinephrine.
Experiments have shown that excess norepinephrine forces stem cells to activate too quickly. They literally flee from their workstations in the follicle, depleting the valuable reserve from which new pigment producers were supposed to emerge. Once the reserve runs out, hair begins to grow completely empty of color.
However, it’s important to understand that hair doesn’t turn white overnight. The part of the hair we can see consists of already formed keratinized cells, and they cannot suddenly lose their color. After stress, only the new section growing from the root is deprived of melanin. Moreover, a typical workload at the office is unlikely to rob you of your hair color — we’re talking about truly severe or prolonged emotional distress.

For our body, hair is not a vital organ. When the body lacks energy or nutrients, it prioritizes the brain and heart first, while hair receives resources on a leftover basis. This is why strict dietary restrictions and rapid weight loss often result in brittle strands and loss of color.
Premature graying can be an indicator that the body is desperately lacking certain elements:
- Vitamin B12. It is critically important for tissue renewal. Its deficiency is often found in strict vegans or people with gastrointestinal diseases;
- Iron. When levels are low, tissues experience oxygen starvation. Hidden iron deficiency can manifest as gray hair, chronic fatigue, and cravings for chalk or ice;
- Copper. This trace element is essential for the enzyme tyrosinase to function, without which melanin production is impossible. Interestingly, uncontrolled intake of large doses of zinc interferes with copper absorption and provokes its deficiency.
Hair pigmentation can also suffer from thyroid dysfunction or conditions like vitiligo. In the latter case, the immune system mistakenly attacks its own melanocytes, which is why a localized large white streak often appears on the head.
Can You Restore Color to Gray Hair?
Upon spotting their first silver strand, many people instinctively reach for tweezers. There is a myth that ten new gray hairs will grow in place of one plucked out, but this is not true. Neighboring follicles work independently. However, plucking gray hairs is strongly discouraged because it damages the root, causes inflammation, and can result in hair ceasing to grow in that spot altogether.

If gray strands appear suddenly, it’s worth discussing the need for tests with your doctor
The chance of restoring hair color depends entirely on the cause of the malfunction. With hereditary graying, restoring pigment is impossible, as the genetic cell reserve has been permanently exhausted. No shampoos, serums, or massages can recreate melanocytes.
However, if the problem is caused by vitamin deficiency, iron deficiency, or severe stress, the situation can sometimes be reversible. With proper replenishment of deficiencies, the new section of hair near the root may become dark again. The key is not to self-prescribe vitamins blindly, as an excess of chemical elements can cause serious harm to the body.
There’s no need to panic over a couple of silver hairs. But if gray hair is rapidly taking over your head within a few months, accompanied by significant hair loss, constant weakness, paleness, or white spots on the skin, that is a strong reason to see a general practitioner or a trichologist.
