After we were all blown away by the Xiaomi 17 Ultra camera, an unexpected rumor appeared online that Xiaomi has stopped development of the Xiaomi 18 Ultra — a smartphone previously described as one of the company’s most ambitious devices in the camera department. There’s no official confirmation, so this information should be treated as an industry leak rather than a final decision. Nevertheless, there’s reason to discuss: if the rumor is true, the Ultra series as we know it may disappear.

Xiaomi’s best camera phone apparently won’t be released

Xiaomi 18 Ultra Specifications

The source claims that the Xiaomi 18 lineup may not include a separate Ultra model. Previously, leaks described the Xiaomi 18 Ultra as a flagship focused on photography with a very serious set of specifications. It wasn’t about a cosmetic update, but an attempt to once again get ahead in the mobile camera race.

According to early data, the Xiaomi 18 Ultra could have featured:

  • A 200 MP telephoto lens with a large sensor
  • LOFIC technology for better handling of light and shadows
  • Continuous optical zoom
  • Macro photography from a distance of about 15 cm
  • A 6.9-inch display
  • A new improved wide-angle module
  • A likely Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro chip

The expected price on the global market was said to be above $1,200–$1,300. In other words, we’re talking about an expensive niche device for those who value the camera above everything else.

Will the Xiaomi 18 Ultra Smartphone Be Released

If you were waiting specifically for a camera phone with maximum optics and zoom, this is unpleasant news: such a device may simply not exist in the Xiaomi 18 generation. The Ultra series has historically been the reason photography enthusiasts chose Xiaomi (large sensors, Leica optics, and professional accessories). The Xiaomi 17 Ultra currently occupies exactly this niche.

For most regular users, however, this changes almost nothing. The rest of the lineup models haven’t gone anywhere and still appear in leaks: the base Xiaomi 18, as well as the Xiaomi 18 Pro and Xiaomi 18 Pro Max. Their cameras will also be strong, just without the extreme focus on photography and without the premium surcharge for Ultra status.

Which Xiaomi Will Have the Best Camera

An important nuance: the cancellation of Ultra doesn’t mean that Xiaomi is giving up on good photography. According to the logic of the leaks, premium camera capabilities may migrate to another model — most likely the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max. It’s already being described as a large device with a 6.9-inch screen and a top-tier chip, meaning it’s quite suited for the role of the main flagship.

For buyers, this is potentially even more convenient: instead of a separate expensive camera phone, the best features are gathered in one Pro Max, which is easier to find for sale and doesn’t lag as far behind in everyday scenarios. If you need a balance of power, display, and camera, this approach looks more reasonable than a narrowly specialized Ultra.

What Will Happen to Xiaomi Camera Phones

If Xiaomi is indeed stepping back from the plan with a 200 MP telephoto and complex optics, this could be a signal not about one model, but about the market as a whole. For several years, manufacturers have been competing in sensor sizes, periscopes, and zoom magnification. But each such upgrade makes the phone more expensive, thicker, and heavier, while the benefit for the average user is growing less noticeably.

Perhaps Xiaomi has come to the conclusion that the market is hitting a practical limit: people more often value a balanced flagship over record camera specs they have to overpay for. This isn’t a death sentence for camera flagships, but a reason not to expect endless growth in megapixels and zoom in every new generation.
