The battery capacity race has reached Huawei: the new Huawei smartphone nova 15 Max bets not on cameras or design, but on a massive battery and precise navigation. It’s a reliable device for those who need not status, but a dependable daily workhorse. If you’re choosing an affordable Android smartphone focused on battery life, you might also want to check out the OnePlus 15T with a 7500 mAh battery. I spent a week with the nova 15 Max as my main phone — here’s what’s good and what raises questions.

Here’s the new Huawei smartphone with a very powerful battery!
Design and Display of Huawei nova 15 Max
In terms of appearance, this is a very pleasant-to-hold phone. I’ve always liked Huawei: they’re Chinese too, but not “typical” like any other brand. The device is large but comfortable to hold, and surprisingly light. The sides feature shiny edges in the style of iPhone 14 Pro: not the most practical solution, but it looks nice, and everything is assembled neatly.

The side edges are amazing. Not the most practical, but very beautiful
However, the Vivo-style camera module with the large circular bump didn’t appeal to me. There’s also a functional X button with quick access to various features — its usefulness is about 50% in my opinion. Overall, this is a stylish Huawei smartphone that looks more expensive than its price tag.

These “flagship-style” camera modules are getting really tiresome
The display is a strong point. It’s a 6.84-inch OLED display with a 120 Hz refresh rate. The display is bright and readable, reportedly reaching up to 4000 nits — even with sunglasses on, in dark mode, and under bright sunlight, everything is perfectly visible. The interface is nicely rendered, and I was particularly pleased with the e-book mode that disables colors: it’s amazing for reading, I just need to find the time for it.
Is Huawei nova 15 Max Good for Gaming
Inside is the Kirin 8000A processor, 8 GB of RAM, and 256 GB of internal storage with no card slot. On paper it’s very modest — only about 770,000 points in AnTuTu. But this is exactly the case where benchmark scores mean nothing, and real-world experience matters: throughout my entire time with it, I didn’t notice a single glitch. Thanks to the very snappy EMUI, which in terms of smoothness is, in my opinion, close to iOS.

The screen is very bright and sharp, despite not having the highest resolution
However, the nova 15 Max won’t make a good gaming smartphone: it can’t push more than 60 frames per second, and there’s no real gaming potential. If gaming is a priority, you should look at competitors with more powerful chips. But if you don’t play games, you won’t have any performance issues at all.
Battery and Battery Life of Huawei nova 15 Max
The main trump card of Huawei nova 15 Max is its smartphone with a powerful battery of a whopping 8500 mAh. And you can really feel those milliamp-hours: the phone easily lasts two and a half days, even without any special settings or turning things off. But credit is also due to the EMUI developers — without such system optimization, this kind of battery life wouldn’t be possible. For me, this is a really important feature. The 40W charging isn’t exactly lightning-fast, but it’s quite adequate for this capacity.

The smartphone truly doesn’t need charging for 3 days
Navigation deserves a special mention — the nova 15 Max has a powerful module supporting GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, and Galileo. In practice, the smartphone pinpoints location accurately even in challenging urban conditions, which is why it’s been called the ideal phone for drivers and couriers. If you’re simply looking for an affordable smartphone under 20,000 rubles, check out the Honor 600 Lite.
Camera and Software of Huawei nova 15 Max
The camera in Huawei nova 15 Max is simple, and I won’t beat around the bush: it’s roughly on the level of my former iPhone 15 Plus. Just good — it won’t create masterpieces, but it can capture a pleasant shot. What pleased me is that it shoots without artifacts. So don’t be fooled by the huge camera module bump: it’s there for aesthetics and texture, but in reality it doesn’t make a difference.

A decent camera. Just decent
The front camera, however, was genuinely disappointing for the first time. I wasn’t even this sad with the Vivo Y35, which cost half the price and came out a couple of years ago. Everything here is blurry, the colors are off, the image is pale — not pleasing at all. The Huawei smartphone on Android runs on EMUI 14.2 without Google services: apps are installed through AppGallery, RuStore, or APK files. On the plus side — there’s integration with Yandex’s “Alice,” and the system runs smoothly without crashes.
Should You Buy the Huawei nova 15 Max
I’ll be honest: I wouldn’t get the Huawei nova 15 Max for myself — I feel it’s not for me. But I can’t call it an outright “dad phone” either, especially with quality speakers at 85 dB. It sits somewhere in the middle, close to iPhone 17e in terms of price-to-quality ratio. You know, it’s like a guy in the friend zone: really nice, you like him, but for some reason you don’t want to be with him.
