This is an expected finale, not a surprise. With the final July update, Phone (1) fulfills its support obligations: three years of Android updates and four years of security patches. The company simply kept its promises.

Why Nothing Phone (1) Is No Longer Being Updated

On the community forum, Nothing confirmed that Phone 1 received its final major upgrade with Android 15, meaning the device will not officially be raised to the fourth version of the system. The last official update contains only the July 2026 security patch, general improvements, bug fixes, and improved system stability, while Nothing Phone (3) will receive Android 17 and several more OS versions.

Technically, enthusiasts have found a way to install Android 16 on the device themselves, but that’s already an unofficial path — with risks, manual installation, and no guarantees. For the average user, the support boundary is Android 15 and that’s it.

What Happens Now with Nothing Phone (1) Security Without Updates

The main practical concern isn’t the absence of new Android versions, but specifically the end of security patches. While the phone was receiving monthly patches, known vulnerabilities were being closed. Now there will be no new patches, and over time security holes will accumulate.

This doesn’t mean you need to immediately throw the smartphone away. Nothing notes that Phone (1) “remains fully usable” and continues to be an important part of the company’s history. But common sense suggests several precautionary measures:

  • Don’t store critical banking and payment data on the device if you have an alternative
  • Only install apps from verified sources
  • Update the apps themselves — their developers continue releasing patches independently of the system
  • Be more careful with suspicious links and files

Should You Install the Final Nothing Phone (1) Update

Yes, installing the final update is worth it — it brings a fresh security patch and general stability improvements, and this is the last thing you’ll receive officially. One note during installation: Nothing warns that the phone may become warmer or consume more battery during the update installation.

This is expected behavior, and performance will return to normal after the installation is complete. So don’t be alarmed by heating and battery drain during the process — let the update install completely, preferably while charging.

Now is the best time to buy the Nothing Phone (3)

If Phone (1) remains your primary phone and you actively use it for payments, government services, and banking — this is a signal to start looking for a replacement. It’s better to choose one now.

If it’s a secondary smartphone, a device for a child, for reading, music, or navigation — you can continue using it without worry. When choosing your next device, it’s useful to look at the support period in advance: this is exactly where manufacturers of affordable flagship models often cut corners.
