In the new Niva, everything drivers used to complain about has been fixed
On its 60th anniversary, the Togliatti-based AvtoVAZ plant delivered a surprise by launching production of the updated Lada Niva Legend. Visually it remains the same, but inside it has undergone the biggest changes in its entire history. Engineers left the recognizable classic design untouched, completely reworking the technical internals to permanently rid the off-roader of its most irritating shortcomings.
What’s New in the New Niva
When car enthusiasts hear about yet another restyling of a domestic classic, most expect to see nothing more than new bumpers or a redesigned radiator grille. However, this time the approach was fundamentally different. According to the Avto.ru Journal, more than 350 new and improved parts were incorporated into the vehicle’s design.
The main intrigue was whether the creators could combine an outdated platform with modern comfort requirements. It turned out that this was possible. Instead of reshaping the legendary silhouette, the factory focused on what buyers had been asking for over the years — rust protection, noise reduction, and improved safety.

Galvanized Body and Driver Airbag
The most frequent complaint from classic off-roader owners has always been the metal’s poor corrosion resistance. Now this problem should be a thing of the past, as for the first time the most vulnerable body panels have been galvanized. This includes six exterior panels: the hood, roof, tailgate, as well as the front and rear trim panels.
The second major breakthrough was safety. For years it was believed that modern protection systems couldn’t be organically integrated into the classic Soviet design. But engineers installed a new steering column, and now an airbag is integrated directly into the steering wheel. And to help the heavy vehicle stop better, ventilated disc brakes were installed on the front axle.
This approach to modernization proved that even vehicles with decades of history can be made more reliable. The driver no longer has to choose between uncompromising off-road capability and personal safety in emergency situations.
1.8-Liter Engine and Redesigned Transmission
A quiet revolution also took place under the hood. The familiar underpowered engine gave way to a new 1.8-liter unit producing 90 horsepower. Thanks to modern tuning, average fuel consumption dropped from 9.9 to 9 liters per 100 kilometers.
The Niva’s transmission received long-awaited changes that outdoor enthusiasts had been requesting for decades:
- the transfer case can now be operated with one lever instead of two;
- the gear shift lever is connected to the transmission through a new linkage mechanism, which eliminated excess vibrations;
- cooling fans were relocated to the engine compartment to optimize the temperature regime.
Driving the off-roader has become noticeably easier, and the frightening transfer case drone at high speeds has finally disappeared from the cabin.
Single Key, Cabin Filter, and Other Interior Changes
If the driver previously had to carry an entire keychain, now a central locking system and a single ignition key come as standard equipment. The owner no longer needs to separately unlock the doors and start the car with different keys, bringing the ergonomics closer to modern standards.
Passenger comfort has also reached an entirely different level. For the first time in this model’s history, a proper cabin air filter has been installed. Dust from country roads will no longer blow in your face, and the new electric heater fan operates significantly quieter than the previous one and is moisture-resistant.

The center console was completely redesigned. Thanks to the removal of the bulky second transfer case lever, space was freed up for cup holders and a convenient niche that easily accommodates a large modern smartphone.
Who the New Niva Legend Is Perfect For
The updated Niva model is sure to appeal to those who value off-road capability but are frankly tired of uncomfortable cabin conditions. It’s an excellent choice for people living in rural regions, travelers, hunters, and fishermen who need a simple and easily repairable vehicle for off-road use that doesn’t lack basic urban comfort.
Sales of the new Lada Legend are expected to begin as early as August 2026. Serial production has already started, but the price of the new Niva will only be announced closer to the sales launch.
