Owners of Apple’s compact tablet are once again in limbo: the next iPad mini promises to be noticeably more interesting than the current one, but the timeline for its release remains vague. The main question is whether to wait for the OLED version or grab the current model with A17 Pro right now. We recently learned that Apple will cut corners on the screen in the OLED iPad mini, and now more details about the company’s new compact tablet have emerged. Let us note right away: everything below is based on rumors, leaks, and industry analysis. Apple has not officially announced anything, so the details should be treated as forecasts.

When Will the New iPad mini Be Released

The estimated release date is October 2026. According to Bloomberg, journalist Mark Gurman reported in July 2026 that the OLED version of the iPad mini is planned specifically for October. Earlier, in October 2025, he also listed the tablet among the devices Apple is preparing by the end of 2026.

The date could shift. The iPad mini lineup has no fixed update schedule: two years or more often pass between generations. The previous model was released in October 2024, so by historical standards, an update doesn’t look inevitable in 2026. Especially since Apple is preparing two tablets at once and the order of their release is still unclear.

There’s also a second risk factor — component shortages. Demand for new Apple chips is high, and CEO Tim Cook directly mentioned supply chain shortages during the Q1 2026 earnings report, including rising RAM prices. All of this could push back the release.

How Much More Powerful Will the New iPad mini Be

The current iPad mini runs on an A17 Pro chip with 8 GB of RAM and supports Apple Intelligence. Most leaks point to a transition to the A19 Pro in the new model.

In August 2025, MacRumors spotted a mention of an iPad mini with A19 Pro in Apple’s code — though the outlet noted that this chip could also have been intended for the iPhone Air. An additional argument is that the iPad mini traditionally gets a more powerful processor than the base iPad, and the base model, according to Macworld, is being prepared with an A19 chip.

The tablet will get a more powerful processor

What will this mean in practice? The A19 Pro is a significant leap over the A17 Pro: faster on-device AI processing, smoother gaming, and quicker photo and video editing. In terms of performance, such an iPad mini would come closer to the iPad Air.

There are also other possible scenarios:

  • If the release shifts to late 2026 or later, the tablet could receive the newer A20 Pro, which is expected in the next generation of iPhone Pro.
  • A less ambitious option with the A18 Pro is also possible — the performance gain would be more modest but still noticeable compared to the current model.

Wireless connectivity is also worth mentioning separately. With the iPhone 17 lineup, Apple introduced the N1 chip with Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 — it’s already in the iPad Air with M4 and is expected to make its way to the iPad mini. Cellular versions, according to rumors, will get Apple’s own C1X modem.

What Will Change After iPad mini Switches to OLED

The most important change for buyers is the transition to an OLED display. Currently, the iPad mini uses a standard Liquid Retina LCD with backlighting, while OLED illuminates each pixel individually. This delivers truly black blacks where black is needed, and higher contrast.

Colors will be more vibrant and saturated

Analyst Ross Young from DSCC was the first to claim OLED for the mini back in October 2024. Later, other sources confirmed this, including Mark Gurman from Bloomberg.

What exactly will users notice:

  • Deep blacks and high contrast — the image looks more three-dimensional.
  • More saturated and accurate colors.
  • Faster response times — less motion blur in games and dynamic scenes.
  • Stable image at viewing angles.
  • More efficient with dark content and a thinner display module overall.

An important caveat: ProMotion and dual-layer OLED from the iPad Pro will most likely not be included in the mini. So it will be a good OLED, but not the top-tier iPad Pro level. Nevertheless, for those who read a lot, watch videos, and play games on a compact screen, this addresses one of the main complaints about the current model.

New Design and Larger iPad mini Screen

Externally, the new iPad mini will likely remain the same — the design hasn’t changed since 2021. But there’s a nuance: the screen may grow to 8.5 inches without increasing the body size, thanks to thinner bezels. This version was voiced by DSCC analysts back in December 2024.

Another rumor from Gurman mentions significantly improved water resistance for the body. Among the possible changes are redesigned seals around the ports and new vibration-based acoustics, which would eliminate the traditional speaker grilles. New colors are also possible: the tablet is currently offered in blue, purple, starlight, and space gray.
