While researchers are detecting new viruses on Android (and this is a real problem that shouldn’t be forgotten), Google is doing its thing and releasing fresh versions of the system. On May 12, 2026, during The Android Show presentation, the company officially unveiled the new Android 17 with a list of features worth waiting for the update. Here’s the breakdown.

Google officially released Android 17

Key New Features of Android 17

Android 17 features cover several areas at once: from camera to security. Let me break them down by category.

Screen Reactions — recording reactions without editing. The new feature allows you to simultaneously record yourself and the screen, overlaying your reaction on top of the video. Essentially a built-in green screen alternative (without exporting files, transferring between apps, or syncing audio). Record it, send it.

Pause Point — against mindless scrolling in apps. Instead of hard timers for social media, Android 17 offers Pause Point: when you try to open a distracting app, the system shows a 10-second pause and offers an alternative (breathing exercise, memories slideshow, or a quick timer). The idea is to make the decision to open TikTok a conscious one, not automatic.

Google significantly updated Digital Wellbeing

Gemini Intelligence — AI is now everywhere. This is the most significant Android 17 innovation. Several key components:

  • Rambler for Gboard: improved voice input that understands pauses, repetitions, and filler words. You dictate naturally, and the system removes the excess on its own;
  • contextual tasks: Gemini sees a shopping list in your notes and assembles a delivery cart, finds a similar tour from a photo of a tourist brochure;
  • custom widgets: Gemini creates personalized home screen widgets with data from Gmail, Calendar, and other apps;
  • Gemini in Chrome: a dedicated button in the browser, page summaries, adding events to Calendar. The auto browse feature allows Gemini to scroll pages and click elements to complete tasks on its own.

Security. Find Hub now requires biometrics when putting a device into lost mode. After that, Android hides quick settings and disables connections to new Wi-Fi and Bluetooth networks. The device’s IMEI is now visible right on the lock screen on Android 12 and newer (useful for police and carriers when recovering stolen phones). The number of PIN entry attempts has been reduced, and delays between failed attempts have increased.

Android 17 means Gemini everywhere, mindful phone usage, and seriously improved security.

Other new features:

  • 3D Noto 3D Emoji: volumetric design with textures, closer to iPhone and Samsung style;
  • Android Auto: YouTube in Full HD at 60 FPS, Dolby Atmos support;
  • Adobe Premiere will launch on Android in summer 2026;
  • AirDrop expands to Oppo, OnePlus, vivo, Xiaomi, and HONOR devices — transferring files from Android to iPhone will become easier;
  • Ultra HDR, video stabilization, and Night Sight for Instagram on Android 17.

An important note: despite the impressive list of features, it’s worth remembering that some fraudulent schemes disguise themselves as Android updates. Install the Android 17 update only through official channels — no APKs from links in messengers.

Android 17: List of Supported Smartphones

Android 17 smartphones primarily include Google Pixel devices. Pixel will receive it first, across the entire lineup from Pixel 6 to Pixel 10 Pro Fold. Other manufacturers will receive the latest Android 17 later (as they adapt their custom skins). Estimated timelines:

  • Samsung Galaxy S-series and Z flagships — end of Q3 2026;
  • HONOR and HUAWEI — fall 2026, via MagicOS and HarmonyOS Next updates;
  • vivo, OPPO, realme — fall-winter 2026.

We covered separately which Xiaomi smartphones will receive Android 17 in a dedicated article. In short: Xiaomi 17, Xiaomi 17 Ultra, Xiaomi 15T Pro, and Leica Leitzphone were the first to receive the Developer Preview. A stable version via HyperOS 3.3 is expected at the end of Q3 2026.

When Will Android 17 Be Released for Phones

The Android 17 release date for the stable version is June 2026. This is the release for Google Pixel smartphones. There is no single date for all other manufacturers: each one adapts the system to its own skin separately. The new Android version is already available as a Developer Preview for Pixel — but this is a build for developers, not for daily use.

If you want to try Android 17 before the official release and you have a Pixel, you can join the beta program at google.com/android/beta. For all other devices, wait for the official announcement from your manufacturer.

How to Update Your Smartphone to Android 17

You can install Android 17 on your smartphone in several ways depending on your device and willingness to risk stability.

Official OTA update — the simplest and safest way:

  1. Open “Settings” on your smartphone.
  2. Go to the “System update” or “Software update” section.
  3. Tap “Check for updates.”
  4. If Android 17 is available, tap “Download and install.”
  5. Wait for the reboot (the process takes 5-10 minutes).
