It is also unclear whether the encounter was accidental or whether people deliberately bred a dog with the wild animal.

In nature, such crosses happen without human involvement. Coyotes and wolves occasionally interbreed on their own, especially where offspring benefit from inheriting wolf-like behavior. So it is entirely possible that someone’s dog simply ran off into the night in response to a call from the brush, and its puppies later spread through nearby settlements. But this is only one hypothesis, and there is no evidence for it yet.

Whether those dogs are directly related to modern chihuahuas, however, is unknown: their genetic traces have not yet been compared with the breed.
