Just recently we learned that Apple is planning to downgrade the iPhone 18 to make its production cheaper, and now we’ve managed to find out what exactly inside the smartphone will get a downgrade. Chinese insider Fixed Focus Digital claims that Apple plans to change the iPhone 18 specifications in two key areas — the display and the processor. The goal is to save on production without raising the retail price. If this information is confirmed, the difference between the standard iPhone and the budget model will become minimal.

How iPhone 18 Will Be Worse Than iPhone 17
According to the insider, the first casualty of cost-cutting is the display. The screen quality in iPhone 18 will be worse than in the current iPhone 17. Specific parameters haven’t been named, but for reference: iPhone 17 received a 6.3-inch display with ProMotion (smooth refresh rate up to 120 Hz) and peak brightness up to 3000 nits outdoors. Since ProMotion became one of the main improvements of last year’s model, most likely brightness will take the hit — although this is still just speculation.

The second area is the chip. Currently, iPhone 17 features the A19 with a five-core GPU, while the budget iPhone 17e has the same A19 but with four GPU cores. The Pro version has six cores. The insider believes that in iPhone 18, the number of GPU cores may be reduced from five to four, effectively equalizing it with the budget model.
Fixed Focus Digital also notes that Apple will very likely rename the chip to mask the downgrade. In other words, the processor name may formally sound new, but in essence it will be a weakened version. There’s also a possibility that the renaming may extend to the smartphone itself, and instead of iPhone 18, we might get something like iPhone 26 or 27.
Why Would Apple Make iPhone 18 Worse
According to the insider, the logic is simple: instead of raising the price of the standard iPhone 18, Apple decided to make its production cheaper. This is part of a new cost control strategy that affects not only the screen and chip, but also memory and other components.
As a result, the standard iPhone 18 will come closer in specs to the budget iPhone 18e. Already now, the difference between iPhone 17 and iPhone 17e is noticeable: Dynamic Island instead of a notch, a larger screen, ProMotion, higher brightness, better front and ultra-wide cameras, and a larger battery. Which of these differences will be preserved in the next generation remains unknown.
Engineering testing of new iPhones should start as early as June
Nevertheless, this is still a rumor, not a confirmed fact. Before mass production of iPhone 18 begins, specifications may change. The insider claims that testing will begin in June — this is the early EVT stage for iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e, after which specifications can still be adjusted.
