Today Bloomberg, citing sources inside the company, reported that Apple is preparing the iPhone Air 2 for a spring 2027 launch. Externally, the smartphone will barely change — the signature thinness isn’t going anywhere. But two important components will be reworked, and these are precisely the areas where the first Air fell short.
What Cameras Will the Second-Generation iPhone Air Get
According to Bloomberg, the iPhone Air 2 prototypes currently being tested inside Apple already have two modules on the back panel. As a reminder, the current iPhone Air has only one 48 MP rear camera. For many, this turned out to be frankly not enough.
An ultra-wide camera will be added to the main lens. This means you’ll be able to shoot landscapes, large groups, and tight spaces where a single lens simply can’t fit the scene into the frame. However, don’t expect a telephoto lens in the new model — it’s not in the current plans. Optical zoom, like on the higher-end iPhones, still won’t be available on the thin Air. If you want to zoom in, you’ll have to crop digitally, with all the resulting quality compromises.

Interestingly, plans to add a second module were reported back in November 2025 by The Information. Spring 2027 was mentioned then as well. When two independent leaks point to the same thing, they become significantly more credible. So the dual-camera version looks like a near-certain deal, although Apple hasn’t officially confirmed anything.
How Apple Plans to Increase iPhone Air Battery Life
The second area Apple is tackling is battery life. And here things are more complicated than with the camera. The iPhone Air’s thin body looks impressive, but beauty comes at a cost. There’s simply little room inside for a battery. That’s why the Air’s battery is more modest than regular iPhones, and it lasts noticeably less from charge to charge. For a smartphone positioned as premium, this is a frustrating drawback.

I wouldn’t expect miracles here. Radically boosting battery life in such a body is nearly impossible — you can’t cheat physics. But even a moderate improvement would already change the impression. If the iPhone Air 2 can confidently last until evening without a recharge, many will overlook everything else. It’s battery life, not the camera, that most often determines whether someone keeps a smartphone or returns it to the store after a week.
When Will iPhone Air 2 Be Released
The iPhone Air 2 release is expected in spring 2027. And this is part of a major restructuring that Apple is launching this year.
The company is splitting the iPhone release schedule into two phases. Previously, the entire lineup was unveiled in the fall all at once. Now the release schedule looks like this:
- Fall 2026: iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the foldable iPhone Fold
- Spring 2027: iPhone Air 2, base iPhone 18, and iPhone 18e
So in fall 2026, Apple focuses on the top-tier models and the long-awaited foldable, while in spring 2027 it releases more affordable smartphones alongside the updated Air. That means iPhone Air 2 will launch alongside the base iPhone 18, not the higher-end Pro models.
The logic here is clear. This approach eases the fall presentation, where Pro models usually steal all the attention, and gives each smartphone its own moment in the spotlight. It also spreads sales throughout the year rather than cramming them into one fall peak. For Apple, this is convenient from every angle, and by all indications, the new scheme is here to stay.
Is It Worth Waiting for iPhone Air 2

In short, it depends on your priorities. The first iPhone Air was all about design and how it felt in hand. Thin, light, unlike anything else. But the compromises on camera and battery turned away those who needed an everyday workhorse, not just a beautiful object for display.
iPhone Air 2 targets precisely these two pain points. The second camera expands shooting scenarios. Improved battery life eliminates the main daily annoyance. Meanwhile, the design will be preserved, so fans of the thin body will get what they want. On paper, this looks like a course correction — and on the right issues at that.
There’s one downside, but it’s significant. The wait is long. Spring 2027 is still far away, and plans could change multiple times before then. Leaks remain leaks, and Apple will only confirm the final specs on stage. My advice is simple. If you need a new smartphone right now, there’s no point sitting around for nearly a year waiting. But if you were eyeing the iPhone Air but were put off by the lone camera or weak battery, the second version might well turn out to be exactly the device you’ve been waiting for. In that case, it’s definitely worth the wait.
