The main idea is to avoid launching separate apps and fiddling with sliders. Apple wants quick photo editing to be done right inside the standard gallery, without third-party editors.

The first tool is Extend — generating image content beyond the boundaries of the original. The feature will allow you to “generate additional image content beyond the original frame”; for example, you can take a close-up shot of a landmark and extend the landscape around it. Users control the amount of added area themselves by stretching the edges of the photo with their fingers.

In short, this is an analog of what Google Pixel and editors like Photoshop with generative fill can already do. Reframe, based on the description, will let you move the viewing point of such a shot after it’s been taken. For most iPhone owners, this is a niche feature for Vision Pro: it primarily makes sense for those who actually shoot spatial photos and view them through the headset.
iOS 27 Release Timeline
Apple won’t show iOS 27 right away. The presentation is scheduled for WWDC on June 8. This means the beta will come out in summer, and the public release — traditionally in fall, alongside new iPhones.
There’s also an important caveat. Development of the new tools “isn’t going entirely smoothly”: Extend and Reframe are working unstably in internal testing, and Apple may delay or cut features if it can’t bring the models to the required quality. If you rarely open the editor in Photos and don’t shoot spatial photos, there’s no point in updating just for these features. Much more important are the promised bug fixes and Siri improvements — they’ll affect everyone, not just those who like to experiment with photo editing. And most importantly: this is still a rumor, and some features may not make it to release. It’s worth drawing conclusions after WWDC on June 8 and the first beta versions.
