According to Bloomberg, in iOS 27, the built-in Photos app will get a dedicated section with Apple Intelligence tools. Inside, there will be three new features for editing photos that will help iPhone users significantly modify existing images. Some of them are currently unstable, and Apple may postpone or cut them.

How the Photos App on iPhone Will Change in iOS 27

This is still a rumor at the level of a Bloomberg report, not an official announcement. According to the publication, iOS 27 will update the editing interface in the Photos app and add a new “Apple Intelligence Tools” section. Inside the menu, there will be three tools that modify photos in “a few seconds.”

New features will appear right in the iPhone gallery

The main idea is to avoid launching separate apps and fiddling with sliders. Apple wants quick photo editing to be done right inside the standard gallery, without third-party editors.

AI-Powered Photo Extension on iPhone

The first tool is Extend — generating image content beyond the boundaries of the original. The feature will allow you to “generate additional image content beyond the original frame”; for example, you can take a close-up shot of a landmark and extend the landscape around it. Users control the amount of added area themselves by stretching the edges of the photo with their fingers.

AI will extend your photos automatically

In short, this is an analog of what Google Pixel and editors like Photoshop with generative fill can already do. It’s useful when a shot has too tight a composition or you need to adapt a photo to a different format — for example, for a cover or stories where there isn’t enough background on the sides.

Auto-Enhancement of Photos on iPhone: What Will Change in iOS 27

The second tool is Enhance. According to the description, it automatically improves image quality, including lighting and colors.

Expectations should be tempered here. An “enhance photo” button in one form or another has been in Photos for many years, and so far its effect has been debatable. What exactly will change with the arrival of Apple Intelligence and how much better the result will be compared to the current one is not clear from the Bloomberg report. This is the kind of feature that’s better judged by real-world tests rather than descriptions.

Photo Perspective Shift on iPhone: Who Will Benefit from Reframe

The third tool is Reframe. It will allow you to “shift the perspective” for spatial photos.

This refers to spatial photos — shots with a depth effect taken by modern iPhones that can then be viewed on Apple Vision Pro. Reframe, based on the description, will let you move the viewing point of such a shot after it’s been taken. For most iPhone owners, this is a niche feature for Vision Pro: it primarily makes sense for those who actually shoot spatial photos and view them through the headset.

iOS 27 Release Timeline

Apple won’t show iOS 27 right away. The presentation is scheduled for WWDC on June 8. This means the beta will come out in summer, and the public release — traditionally in fall, alongside new iPhones.

There’s also an important caveat. Development of the new tools “isn’t going entirely smoothly”: Extend and Reframe are working unstably in internal testing, and Apple may delay or cut features if it can’t bring the models to the required quality. Simply put, it’s not certain that we’ll see all three tools in the first version of iOS 27 — some may appear later as a separate update or not come out at all.

Besides the photo editor, other changes are expected in iOS 27. The update should include significant Siri improvements, as well as a focus on bug fixes and overall system stability. For many users, the latter will be more important than any new AI features.

Is It Worth Updating to iOS 27 for the New Photos Features

The new photo editing features are cool, but the key question is whether Apple will finish them in time

The new tools in Photos are a convenience, not a revolution. They’ll be useful for those who frequently edit photos directly on iPhone and don’t want to install third-party editors: Extend will help with cropping and formats, Enhance — with quick corrections, Reframe — for Vision Pro owners.

If you rarely open the editor in Photos and don’t shoot spatial photos, there’s no point in updating just for these features. Much more important are the promised bug fixes and Siri improvements — they’ll affect everyone, not just those who like to experiment with photo editing. And most importantly: this is still a rumor, and some features may not make it to release. It’s worth drawing conclusions after WWDC on June 8 and the first beta versions.
