Google Play in the United States now has a section called “Third-party app stores.” Users can install a full alternative app store there the same way they install any other app. According to the source author, this requires no manual APK download and no extra system permissions or warnings. The only store listed so far is Aptoide Games, a mobile game store from the makers of Aptoide. In testing, the source author found that some games download directly through Aptoide Games, while others redirect to Google Play. Google’s page for the section states that the feature is available in the US, so most users outside that region will not see it yet.
What you need to know
- The new section followed Google’s long-running dispute with Epic Games. After that dispute, Google was required to open the US version of its store to competing marketplaces.
- Aptoide Games is the first participant. It has been installable directly through Google Play since August 10, 2026.
- Some games in Aptoide Games are installed by Google Play through the Play Catalog Access program. Others download directly from Aptoide’s own catalog.
- According to Google’s page for the section, Google checks that the store meets the program’s requirements. It does not review each app in the store’s independent catalog.

The third-party app stores section in Google Play
Why Google is letting rival stores in
For years, Google Play did not host competing app stores. Android users who wanted one had to download the store’s APK from its official website and allow installation from unknown sources. The new “Third-party app stores” section is the result of Google’s multi-year legal dispute with Epic Games. After that dispute, Google was required to open the US version of its catalog to competing platforms.
The first participant is Aptoide Games, a separate mobile game store from the creators of Aptoide. Since August 10, 2026, it can be installed directly through Google Play like any other app.

Aptoide Games in the Google Play store
Google has not turned Aptoide Games into its own games section. Aptoide Games is an independent store with its own catalog, interface and app distribution system.

How to install Aptoide Games from Google Play
The source author tested the feature on an Android smartphone signed in to a US Google account. Google Play showed a dedicated section that, at the time of testing, contained only Aptoide Games. You can open the third-party app stores page in Google Play directly.
The source describes these steps:
- Open Google Play on your smartphone.
- Tap your profile icon.
- Find the “Third-party app stores” section.
- Select Aptoide Games from the list that opens.
- Tap “Install” and wait for the download to finish.

Installing Aptoide Games through Google Play
According to the source, you can also find the section through Google Play search. On the author’s phone, the list showed a single store with a standard install button. No manual APK download was needed. Google Play downloaded Aptoide Games and added it to the phone, and the install button then changed to the usual “Open” button. It looks like any ordinary app install, but launching it opens a separate catalog with its own collections, search and downloads.
Two different ways games get installed
The source author describes the Aptoide Games interface as fairly simple:
- The home page shows recommendations, popular games, bonus offers and categories.
- Search and the updates list sit in the bottom bar.
- The catalog included titles such as Clash of Kings, Subway Surfers and Infinity Kingdom.
The more notable finding came when the author tried to download games.

Some games redirect to Google Play
The listing for Subway Surfers said the game is distributed through Google Play. When the author tapped “Install,” a Google Play window opened with the game’s description and an install button instead of a normal download.

A redirect to Google Play when installing through Aptoide Games
In these cases, Aptoide Games acts as an additional catalog: you find the game in one store and download it from another. According to the source, this works through the Play Catalog Access program, which gives third-party platforms access to Google Play app listings.
Others download directly from Aptoide
Infinity Kingdom behaved differently. After the author tapped the button, the download began inside Aptoide Games itself. The store showed progress for a 1.8 GB file without switching to Google Play.

Installing a game through Aptoide Games

So Aptoide Games uses two distribution methods:
- Through Google Play. The store shows the game’s listing, but Google handles the download and installation.
- Through Aptoide Games. The app is downloaded directly from the alternative catalog.
Which method applies depends on the individual game. The source cautions against assuming that any title unavailable on Google Play can automatically be downloaded from Aptoide.
The author also notes an important limitation of the test. They checked only that the Infinity Kingdom download started. They did not confirm that it fully installed and launched. It therefore cannot yet be said that every game in Aptoide’s own catalog works without problems.
The main limitation: US only
Google states on the section’s page that the feature is available in the US. The source author was able to use it because they had a US Google account.
Users elsewhere can still install the regular Aptoide app separately. That remains a conventional third-party store installation outside Google Play, not a download through Google Play.

Easier to install, but not every app is vetted by Google
Allowing Aptoide Games to be installed directly does not make Google responsible for every game inside it. Google’s page for third-party stores says such services follow their own security and privacy policies. Google checks that the store itself meets the program’s requirements, but it does not review each app in the store’s independent catalog.
The source also highlights these points:
- Games installed through Google Play continue to be served by Google’s infrastructure.
- Apps downloaded directly through Aptoide are distributed and updated under that store’s rules.
- Payments in the third-party catalog do not necessarily go through Google Play.
- A store being available in Google Play does not guarantee the safety of every app inside it.
Before installing an unfamiliar game, the source recommends checking the developer, the permissions requested and where the download comes from. It also notes that different Android stores can conflict when updating apps, so it helps to keep track of which store an app was installed from.

Verdict: a promising mechanism with clear limits
The source author came away with mixed impressions. On one hand, an alternative store can finally be installed without hunting for an APK or taking extra steps. On the other, Aptoide Games does not always offer an independent download, and some games simply send users back to Google Play.
The author still sees the mechanism as promising. If more stores join the section, Android users will have more choice. For now, the main restriction is region. Only owners of eligible US accounts can try the feature through Google Play. Everyone else will need to keep using the usual methods for installing alternative app stores.
