One UI 9.0 on Android 17 was unveiled at Samsung’s presentation of its new foldable smartphones, including the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Fold 8 Ultra, and Flip 8. As is typical, the new firmware ships first on the latest flagships and then rolls out to previous-generation devices over the following weeks.

For a number of models, however, this version marks the finish line: they will receive the new interface, but there will be no further jump to a new Android version after this.

It’s worth noting that these devices are far from obsolete. The Galaxy S23 series, for example, remains capable hardware with plenty of performance headroom for continued daily use.
Support won’t end overnight
It’s important to distinguish between the end of major OS updates and the end of all support. Receiving the last version of Android does not mean a device will stop getting any updates at all. Even after the final major upgrade, Samsung will continue to release security patches for at least another year, and for flagships the security update window is typically longer.
The S23 and other devices won’t stop receiving updates overnight
These security patches arrive on a regular monthly schedule. The devices on this list were still included in Samsung’s most recent round of security patches, demonstrating that support remains active.
There is also an additional possibility: some of these devices may receive One UI 9.5 in 2027. While this would not technically be a new OS — it would still run Android 17 under the hood — it could bring interface refinements and additional features.
Should you replace your device now?
If your phone or tablet appears on this list, there is no urgent reason to replace it. The device will remain functional, secure, and running a current interface for a considerable time to come. Nothing dramatic happens the moment a device receives its last major OS update.

That said, buying any of these devices new at this stage is harder to recommend, since their major-update runway is now effectively over.
