Xiaomi smartphones regularly receive system updates, but there’s one annoying aspect to this process — after installation, the device almost always needs to reboot, and sometimes Xiaomi reboots endlessly. While the phone shuts down, installs the update, and starts up again, it’s impossible to use it. Sometimes this takes just a minute, and sometimes — significantly longer. But it looks like the situation may change soon, as Xiaomi is preparing a new Super OTA update system (SOTA), which will arrive with the release of HyperOS 3.1.

The user will simply receive an update notification, the system will download the necessary files, install them in the background, and continue working. A reboot won’t be needed in such cases.
Why Xiaomi Reboots After an Update
Most Android updates affect system files that are in use while the device is running. To replace such files, the system has to temporarily stop certain components from working.

This is exactly why the smartphone reboots and installs the update in a special mode. The new Super OTA system solves this problem by separating system components. Some parts of the firmware can be updated separately without affecting the entire system partition.
Which Updates Will Be Installed Without Rebooting
It’s important to understand that the new technology doesn’t eliminate rebooting entirely. Major HyperOS updates will still require a device restart. For example:
- Android version updates;
- major HyperOS updates;
- system kernel changes.
However, smaller updates will be able to install without rebooting. These include:
- system service updates;
- bug fixes;
- individual UI component updates;
- security patches.
This will allow Xiaomi to distribute fixes and improvements faster, and for us — not to wait a long time while all components install on the smartphone.

The Super OTA technology is expected to debut alongside the release of HyperOS 3.1. The company hasn’t officially announced a release date yet, but according to rumors, it could happen in the coming months. If Xiaomi’s plans don’t change, the company’s smartphones will be able to receive some updates without rebooting in the upcoming system versions.
And if the technology truly works as intended, the Android update process on Xiaomi devices will become noticeably faster and more convenient for users.
