Xiaomi renamed its MIUI firmware at the end of 2023, presenting the public with a completely different name. At the time, it was presented as a revolution: new architecture, new philosophy, a new stage of development. A year and a half has passed — the third generation of the HyperOS update has already been released, and rumors have started circulating online that the company is once again considering a name change. This time toward something related to artificial intelligence. Well, of course!

What Will Xiaomi’s New Firmware Be Called

The information was leaked by insider @That_Kartikey. According to him, inside Xiaomi the next new version of HyperOS — the one that will replace the third generation — is already informally being called “AIOS.” The reason is simple: the company is placing a big bet on AI features and wants the system’s name to reflect that.

It sounds logical given what’s happening in the market. Every other manufacturer is now adding the word “AI” wherever they can: in camera names, modes, plans, and even smartphones. At the same time, Xiaomi’s shell has been actively acquiring neural network features since the second generation, so the next step in the form of a “smart” rebrand looks quite predictable.

Why AIOS Is Worse Than HyperOS

There are two immediate problems with this name:

  • AIOS sounds like iOS. Not just similar — it literally sounds like it. Say it out loud. For markets where Apple holds strong positions, this is a potential source of confusion and likely legal questions. It’s unlikely that Xiaomi’s lawyers would approve such a name for the final version.
  • The name AIOS already exists — and it belongs to Meizu. The Chinese manufacturer announced its own AI shell under this name even earlier. Then again, Meizu recently shut down its mobile business, meaning the trademark may formally be available. Whether it’s a coincidence that rumors about the HyperOS firmware name change appeared right now is an open question.

The insider clarifies: there is no official decision to rename. This is an internal working title that employees use in conversations. Before the final release, it could easily change to anything — for example, HyperAIOS, which would be much safer from a branding perspective.

Why Xiaomi Renamed MIUI to HyperOS

This is already the third potential rebrand in a relatively short time. MIUI existed since 2010 and became one of the most recognizable Android skins. At the end of 2023, it was replaced by a completely new system — officially for the sake of a “unified ecosystem” of devices, but in reality for a fresh marketing narrative.

Users didn’t feel the difference right away. Under the hood, HyperOS initially carried all the same solutions, just with a redesigned interface and a new set of features. Fundamental architectural changes came later. Incidentally, it was precisely because of the system’s features that Xiaomi smartphones stopped rebooting after installing updates — this was one of the few changes users noticed immediately.

Now the company is preparing for the next stage. Xiaomi’s update in terms of AI features is keeping up with competitors: Samsung is actively promoting Galaxy AI, Google is building Gemini into all its products, and Apple calls its feature package Apple Intelligence. But from a branding perspective, Xiaomi’s firmware named HyperOS looks like a system that has AI features but lacks a loud AI name.

When Will the Xiaomi Update Be Released

In practical terms — nothing critical. Devices currently receiving the HyperOS 3 update will continue to receive it regardless of what the next version of the system will be called. At the same time, it’s important to understand: the list of devices that will stop receiving updates is determined by hardware and company policy, not by a name change.

The other question is a marketing one. If Xiaomi truly launches in the fall with a big announcement under a new name, it will be yet another news hook for presentations and headlines. Whether real changes will back it up — only time will tell. The HyperOS update with or without the AI prefix is expected to arrive in the fall of 2026 along with the flagship Xiaomi 18 lineup. There are no official comments from the company yet.
