For a smartphone to make it to Android 22, it needs two things: to launch on a sufficiently recent version of Android and to have a long corridor of major updates. If a device initially ships with a late version (say, Android 16), and the manufacturer promises many consecutive Android generations — then the chance of getting Android 22 becomes real rather than theoretical.
