After the WWDC 2026 presentation, a mild panic broke out online. Many assumed that the updated Siri with artificial intelligence would only be available on devices released from 2024 onwards. In reality, it’s much simpler: AI Siri will come to all gadgets that support Apple Intelligence, and the limitation applies to just two features. Let’s figure out who actually needs newer hardware and who has nothing to worry about.

You may have already been scared that your iPhone, iPad or Mac won’t support the new Siri
Which Versions of iOS, iPadOS and macOS Will Support Siri AI
Apple showed AI Siri at the opening of WWDC 2026 on June 8. The new Siri will launch in the fall alongside updates to iOS 27, macOS 27, iPadOS 27, and visionOS 27.
The key thing to understand here is that AI Siri is built on top of Apple Intelligence, Apple’s smart features system, and will appear on all devices that already support it. Among the new capabilities is a conversational mode similar to a chatbot, where you can ask the assistant questions in free form.

If your iPhone supports Apple Intelligence, it automatically supports the smart Siri
If your iPhone, iPad, or Mac already works with Apple’s smart features, the new Siri won’t pass you by. There’s no “only for 2024 devices and newer” restriction here.
Why Users Thought Siri AI Only Works on New Devices
The entire panic was caused by one slide from the presentation that was taken out of context. Apple mentioned the most advanced on-device model and immediately added that it’s available only on a limited number of devices.
For iPhone, that means iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. For iPad, you need any model with an M4 chip or newer and 12 GB of RAM. For Mac, an M3 chip or newer will work, also with 12 GB of memory or more.

That very slide with requirements that caused the confusion
This is exactly where many people stopped listening. And that was a mistake: the advanced model is responsible for just two features, not all the smart capabilities at once. Because of this misunderstanding, people online seriously started discussing whether it was time to replace a MacBook Pro with M1 Pro, and complaining that the iPhone 16 Pro Max was supposedly left without the new Siri.
Which Siri AI Features Are Only Available on New iPhone, iPad and Mac
This is very specific. Newer hardware is needed for exactly two things:
- Siri voice customization, to adjust how exactly the assistant sounds;
- improved system dictation for more accurate voice-to-text input across the entire system.
And that’s it. Nothing else that falls under the AI Siri and Apple Intelligence umbrella is tied to these two features. The remaining capabilities will come to devices with Apple Intelligence that you already own. By the way, the base iPhone 17 won’t get these features either, and the culprit is the amount of RAM.

Even the base iPhone 17 will miss out on these features
Speech recognition for dictation has indeed improved — this is no longer the old model. But keep in mind that this is currently relevant exclusively for the English language and does not work with Russian.
Do You Need to Buy a New iPhone for Siri AI
In short, replacing a working iPhone or Mac just for the new Siri makes no sense. If the two features above are critical for you — for example, if you dictate a lot of text — that’s a reason to consider a newer model. But for most people, this isn’t a reason to rush to the store.

The new Siri also looks pretty cool
Especially since the first version of any such system is usually rough around the edges. One iPhone 17 Pro Max owner with the new Siri already enabled complained that the assistant confused words, sent emails to the wrong recipients, and couldn’t handle simple requests. It’s a beta — much will be fixed by the final release in the fall, but you shouldn’t have illusions about a perfect assistant right out of the box.
Who Can Get By with an Older iPhone, iPad or Mac for the New Siri
Let’s draw the line: owners of any device with Apple Intelligence don’t need to panic. The new Siri will come to you in the fall with the system update, and you won’t be left without its main capabilities.

Upgrading from iPhone 16 to 17 Pro just for Siri voice customization is definitely not worth it
It only makes sense to consider newer models for two categories of users: those who want to customize the assistant’s voice, and those for whom the most accurate voice dictation is important. Everyone else can calmly wait for the fall update and not believe the headlines claiming that Siri will only be available to a select few.
