The Baphomet moth is a media-coined, unofficial name that emerged due to the insect’s frightening appearance. Baphomet is an occult symbol characterized by a goat head and horns.
When photos of this insect began circulating online, people thought it resembled a demonic figure — with “horns” or “tentacles.”
In reality, Creatonotos gangis is a tropical nocturnal moth from the family Erebidae (tiger moths). Males of this species have special retractable organs called coremata. In their normal state, they are hidden inside the abdomen and invisible. During the mating season, the male everts them outward, and that’s when those long, fluffy appendages appear.
