On April 1, 2026, Pavel Durov’s messenger finally stopped working in our region. That’s why a Telegram replacement in Russia is no longer an abstract question for the future, but an urgent necessity. It matters to millions of people who spent years running work chats, reading channels, and communicating with loved ones there. Here we’ll talk about what to do about it. And most importantly — which messengers of 2026 actually work and don’t make you want to immediately delete them.

Together we’re looking for a worthy Telegram replacement

Let me say right away: a full-fledged Telegram alternative doesn’t exist. None of the messengers listed below can replicate the ecosystem with thousands of channels, bots, and years of chat history. But they do let you stay in touch, and that’s what matters most right now.

imo — The Most Popular Telegram Replacement

The imo messenger is an American development, created back in the late 2000s. It’s currently controlled by a Chinese investor. It’s imo that has shot to the top of Russian App Store downloads in recent months, surpassing most competitors.

Registration is by phone number, +7 works without issues. The app is available on RuStore and Google Play.

What it can do:

  • personal and group chats, voice and video calls;
  • stable performance even on a weak internet connection — the app is optimized to save data;
  • channels and public rooms;
  • synchronization across devices: Android, iOS, Windows, macOS.

Pros and cons:

  • works without a VPN, stable;
  • free, with a simple interface;
  • imo has experience working with Russian authorities (in 2017, the service agreed to localize user data, after which the block was lifted);
  • on the downside — there’s no age moderation: public sections contain a lot of 18+ content, not suitable for children.

From a security standpoint, imo is a free messenger without end-to-end encryption by default. User data is stored on the company’s servers. It’s not the best choice for private communication. But for everyday calls and messaging, it’s a perfectly workable option.

Korean Messenger KakaoTalk

The KakaoTalk messenger was developed by the South Korean company Kakao Corporation and launched in 2010. In its home country, over 90% of smartphone owners use it, making it essentially a national communication infrastructure. In March 2026, the Korean messenger unexpectedly burst into the top 30 of the Russian App Store, giving imo a direct competitor.

Registration is by phone number, Russian +7 is supported. The interface is partially available in Russian. Available on Google Play and RuStore.

What it can do:

  • personal chats, group chats with up to 2,000 participants;
  • one-on-one and group voice and video calls;
  • Open Chat — open anonymous rooms by interest, something between a chat and a forum;
  • channels (require linking a Gmail account to create);
  • a huge sticker store.

Pros and cons:

  • a mature product with years of history, not a raw startup;
  • works stably;
  • Open Chat — an interesting feature for those who miss Telegram’s public chats;
  • on the downside — the interface is unfamiliar for those coming from Telegram, it takes time to adapt;
  • the Russian-speaking audience is still small, and there are almost no Russian-language channels.

In terms of security, the Kakao messenger uses encryption during data transmission, but there’s no end-to-end encryption by default. The company stores user data on its servers in South Korea. It’s not ideal for those who value privacy, but it’s acceptable for everyday communication.

BiP Messenger with Secret Chats

The BiP messenger was developed by Turkcell, one of the largest Turkish telecommunications operators. This isn’t an enthusiast startup but a product with serious corporate backing. In Russia, BiP works without restrictions and positions itself as a secure messenger with a focus on privacy.

Registration is by phone number. Russian numbers are supported, though some users report issues receiving the SMS verification code. If it doesn’t work on the first try, try again after a few minutes. The app is available on Google Play and RuStore.

What it can do:

  • personal and group chats, voice and video calls, including international;
  • secret chats with a self-destruct message timer;
  • file sharing up to 4 GB;
  • channels and group chats.

Pros and cons:

  • secret chats with auto-deletion (a rarity among free messengers at this level);
  • large file limit (4 GB compared to Telegram’s 2 GB);
  • works without restrictions (for now);
  • on the downside — the audience is small, convincing contacts to switch to BiP is harder than with more well-known alternatives;
  • registration issues.
