Apple quite expectedly unveiled the MacBook Neo — the most affordable laptop in the Mac lineup. Its price starts at just $599. For the company, this is practically a revolution, since even the base MacBook Air models cost significantly more not long ago. Because of this price, many immediately started looking for a catch and discussing the drawbacks, limitations, and outright shortcomings of the MacBook Neo, of which there turned out to be more than two dozen. However, if you look at the MacBook Neo without comparing it to more expensive Macs, it becomes clear that it has several very strong points. Moreover, for a huge number of users, this laptop may turn out to be an even more rational purchase than the MacBook Air.

If you think about it, there are still reasons to buy the MacBook Neo. Image: techradar.com
MacBook Neo — Apple’s Cheapest Laptop
The main reason to pay attention to the MacBook Neo is its price. At $599, it’s the most affordable way to enter the macOS ecosystem and get a full-fledged Apple laptop. For students and educators, the price drops to just $499, making the Neo one of the cheapest modern laptops with a premium brand.
For comparison, even the base MacBook Air usually costs significantly more. Yes, the Air and Neo differ from each other like a Lada and a Mercedes, but the price difference between them is just as stark. At the same time, most users use a laptop for fairly simple tasks: browser, documents, email, video, and messaging apps. In such scenarios, there’s simply no good reason to overpay several hundred dollars for a more powerful model.
MacBook Neo Screen: Display Resolution and Quality
Despite its status as a budget laptop, Apple didn’t cut too many corners on the display. The MacBook Neo features a high-quality panel with a high resolution of 2408 by 1506 pixels, thanks to which text, photos, and the macOS interface look very sharp and pleasant to the eyes. Windows laptops in the same price range often offer only Full HD.

Yes, the screen lacks True Tone technology, which automatically adjusts the color temperature to match ambient lighting, and the color gamut isn’t P3. But in practice, for most users, this isn’t critical. What matters more is that the display remains bright, contrasty, and perfectly suited for working with text, watching movies, and regular web browsing.
macOS on MacBook Neo: Why the System Runs Faster Than Windows
Another important advantage of the MacBook Neo is the macOS operating system. It’s known for its optimization, stability, and good performance even on relatively modest hardware. Unlike many Windows laptops, macOS far less frequently suffers from unnecessary processes and background tasks.

Additionally, the system is excellently integrated with other Apple devices. If you already have an iPhone or iPad, you can quickly transfer files via AirDrop, answer calls from the laptop, and sync notes, photos, and documents through iCloud. All of this makes work much more convenient. And if we remember iPhone Mirroring for apps, notifications, and file transfers, then MacBook Neo at this price has virtually no competitors.
MacBook Neo Body: Aluminum Like the Expensive MacBooks

Despite the low price, Apple retained one of the key elements of its signature design for the MacBook Neo — an aluminum body. This is the same approach the company uses in the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.
The metal makes the laptop more durable and pleasant to use. It handles everyday wear better, doesn’t creak, and looks significantly more expensive than most plastic Windows laptops. As a result, even the budget model feels like a full-fledged premium product.
How Long Does the MacBook Neo Last and What Are Its Speakers Like
The MacBook Neo also offers decent battery life — up to 16 hours of video playback. Even considering the more affordable price, the laptop can run for many hours without charging. For studying, working on the go, or traveling, this is a serious advantage. Windows devices can’t do that, and I verified this myself when I used a Huawei computer for the same 600 dollars.
Additionally, the device features stereo speakers. Yes, there are only two of them, and they fall short of the four- or six-speaker systems in more expensive MacBooks. But for watching videos, video calls, and casual music listening, their quality is more than sufficient.
Is the A18 Pro Enough for Working on the MacBook Neo
The processor deserves a separate mention. The MacBook Neo uses the A18 Pro chip, which Apple previously put in the iPhone 16 Pro. On paper, this might seem unusual, but in practice, its power is quite sufficient for everyday tasks.
Web browsing, documents, presentations, school projects, video watching, messaging apps, and even light photo editing — the laptop handles all of this without noticeable issues. For most users, these are exactly the kinds of scenarios that make up their primary workload.

Ultimately, the MacBook Neo can’t be called a universal laptop for heavy tasks like professional video editing or complex development. But if you need an affordable, fast, and convenient laptop for everyday work, Apple’s new model may turn out to be one of the most compelling options on the market.
