Yandex has released a standalone Internetometer app for iOS and Android that measures internet speed. Essentially, it’s a mobile version of the well-known Yandex web service that previously only worked in a browser.

On iPhone, you can download Yandex Internetometer from the App Store. The feature set is standard for apps of this type: measuring download speed, upload speed, and latency (ping) in milliseconds. The app also shows your IP address and connection region. Using it is extremely simple: download it, open it, tap the “Measure” button, and wait for the result.

The key difference from Speedtest by Ookla and similar apps is that Internetometer uses Yandex servers distributed across Russia. This can provide more accurate results specifically for Russian users, since the servers are physically closer to the subscriber and the route to them is shorter.

Speedtest or Internetometer: Which Is Better

After the Speedtest block, there weren’t many options left

Speedtest by Ookla is the most popular speed measurement tool, but in Russia this service is blocked and can only be accessed with a foreign network location. Consequently, speed measurements through it would show something far from real values. In this regard, Internetometer from Yandex is naturally more convenient and accurate.

It’s also worth considering the practical aspect: measurement results through Internetometer more accurately reflect the real speed of working with domestic resources — streaming services, marketplaces, and government portals. These are the services that most Russian users spend the majority of their online time with. However, for now the app looks quite basic. Yandex promises that an extended measurement mode will appear in the future, but the company hasn’t revealed details about it.

Slow Internet on Your Phone

In addition to the extended measurement mode for regular users, Yandex is preparing a personal dashboard for internet providers. In it, providers will be able to track measurement results within their coverage area. This is an interesting move: if the service gains an audience, it will become a tool for monitoring connection quality not only for subscribers but also for the operators themselves.

This approach benefits all parties: users get an independent tool for verifying the speed promised by their provider, while operators themselves get aggregated analytics on network quality across different districts and cities. Such data helps more accurately plan infrastructure development.

The app is free and already available in the App Store and Google Play. For the average iPhone user, it’s simply another way to check internet speed — with the difference that the app works in Russia without any workarounds.
