You’d think a 14-day return policy is all about caring for the customer. But resourceful scammers have turned it into a money-making scheme: buy an iPhone, remove the original screen, install a cheap copy, and return the phone. Not only have Apple product prices gone up, but now you have to worry about new phones with fake screens? On a single smartphone, the price difference between screens brings in 1,100 to 1,150 yuan (12,700–13,300 rubles) in pure profit. Apple responded to the scandal and explained why this scheme is doomed to fail.

How the iPhone Screen Swap Scheme Works

The issue came to light through a report by the Chinese publication “Dahe Bao.” A number of phone sellers and tech bloggers reported that scammers had developed a simple but profitable scheme. They purchase a new iPhone from an official Apple Store or the official website, then carefully remove the original OLED display and replace it with a cheap third-party alternative.

Then Apple’s generous policy kicks in: 14 days to return without giving a reason. The scammer returns the smartphone with the swapped screen to the store, and sells the original display on the secondary market. According to industry expert estimates, the price difference between an original and a fake screen ranges from 1,100 to 1,150 yuan per device. The scammer doesn’t even need to spend their own money on buying the phone: after the return, the funds go back to their account.

Simply put, the entire “investment” is the cost of a cheap screen and the labor to install it. And the output is a premium-class original display that’s easy to sell.

How Apple Inspects iPhones During Returns

On March 10, journalists reached out to Apple’s technical support service for comment. The company’s response was quite categorical. An Apple representative confirmed that the 14-day return policy does indeed exist and that customers can return a device if they’re not satisfied. But there’s an important condition.

Every returned product undergoes a mandatory inspection at the warehouse. The device must show no signs of damage, and opening the case and replacing components is classified as damage. Only after a successful inspection, within 3–5 business days, does the customer receive their refund.

“If a product has been opened or repaired, we are able to detect it,” said the support representative. In fact, modern iPhones contain numerous software markers that link specific components to specific devices. Replacing the screen with a non-original one inevitably leaves a digital trace.

Can Apple Sell an iPhone with a Swapped Screen

Perhaps the most alarming question in this whole story: what if a scammer actually manages to return a phone with a fake screen — could Apple sell it to the next customer? The support service’s answer on this matter was unequivocal.

Products purchased through the official website and Apple’s brand stores are always completely new, unopened, and unactivated,” the company representative emphasized. Returned devices are not put back on sale. This means that even if a hypothetical scammer somehow bypasses the inspection, their phone with a swapped screen won’t end up on a store shelf.

However, this answer only applies to official sales channels. On the secondary market and from unauthorized sellers, the situation can be completely different. According to sources, that’s exactly where smartphones with replaced screens end up, misleading unsuspecting buyers.

How Much Does iPhone Screen Replacement Cost at Apple in 2026

To understand the scale of the scammers’ profit, just look at Apple’s official display repair prices. The numbers are impressive. According to data from Apple’s official website, the cost of replacing a damaged screen is:

  • iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro — 2,698 yuan (approximately 31,500 rubles);
  • iPhone 17 Pro Max — 3,198 yuan (approximately 37,000 rubles);
  • iPhone 17e — 1,879 yuan (approximately 22,000 rubles).

The thing is, original Apple displays are among the most expensive smartphone components. For comparison, a third-party iPhone screen can cost several times less, which creates that very difference of 1,100–1,150 yuan (12,700–13,300 rubles) that scammers profit from. Essentially, it’s trading in one of the most valuable “organs” of the smartphone.

But there’s a nuance: with each iPhone generation, the system linking components to the device becomes increasingly strict. Replacing the screen with a non-original one has long triggered warnings in iOS settings, and Apple’s diagnostic tools detect mismatched part serial numbers. Screen repair at Apple is not a cheap pleasure. That’s exactly why original displays are so valued on the black market.

The screen swap story is yet another reminder: you should only buy iPhones and their components from trusted sources. There are no official Apple Stores in Russia that guarantee the authenticity of every device, so carefully choose your sellers and don’t fall for prices that are too low. Remember, you get what you pay for.
