Apple has unveiled the iPhone 17e — an affordable smartphone with serious improvements. At first glance, the main changes are obvious: the A19 chip, MagSafe support, and the updated Ceramic Shield 2 for a more scratch-resistant screen. But behind the bold headlines lie details that matter for anyone choosing between models or simply wanting to understand what they’re paying for. Let’s break down what Apple tried to hide and why it matters.

The most interesting things about the iPhone 17e are often left unsaid.

What Processor Is in the iPhone 17e: A Trimmed-Down A19

The move to the A19 chip is undoubtedly a step forward, but there’s an important nuance here. The standard iPhone 17 features this chip with a 5-core GPU, while the iPhone 17e has the graphics processor cut down to 4 cores. In practice, this means slightly more modest performance in games and demanding applications.

However, you can’t call this a downgrade: the previous iPhone 16e also had a 4-core GPU in its A18 chip. So users upgrading from the 16e won’t lose anything — they simply won’t get the maximum from the new chip. But it will still be more powerful than the previous model. For most everyday tasks, the difference will be barely noticeable, if at all.

Which iPhones Require eSIM

One of the most practically important points is the expansion of regions where models ship without a physical SIM card slot. While the iPhone 16e was eSIM-only in the US alone, the iPhone 17e has lost its physical SIM tray in several countries: the US, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and a number of other territories.

This is convenient for those who frequently switch carriers or travel — activation happens instantly without visiting a carrier store. But for users accustomed to physical SIM cards or working with carriers that don’t support eSIM, this could become an unexpected obstacle before purchase.

For Russia, this matters because iPhones flow into the market from all over the world. Research in advance which region a device was intended for to avoid an unpleasant surprise. However, if the SIM format doesn’t matter to you and you’re ready to use eSIM, feel free to grab the cheapest option (within reason) and enjoy it.

What Battery Does the iPhone 17e Have

The battery capacity remains the same — 4005 mAh, just like the iPhone 16e. The official battery specs for both models are identical. This isn’t bad in itself — it means battery life hasn’t worsened — but there’s no progress in this area either.

Also, many have stopped mentioning that iPhones no longer come with a charger in the box — there’s only a cable. On one hand, this has become the norm, and there’s nothing inherently wrong with it since everyone has power adapters at home, but it’s still worth keeping in mind. Especially if you’re switching from an Android smartphone, most of which still ship with a charger, and you haven’t been closely following what’s happening in the Apple world.

How the New iPhone’s Camera Is Different

If you didn’t know the details, the iPhone 17e’s camera is even worse than the iPhone 15’s. Nevertheless, there’s one pleasant surprise waiting for you. The new model features a next-generation portrait mode: the smartphone automatically recognizes people, dogs, and cats, saves depth data for the scene, and allows you to turn a regular photo into a portrait with a blurred background after the shot has already been taken.

You can change the focus point directly in the Photos app — without needing to enable portrait mode beforehand. This makes the camera noticeably smarter and more convenient in real-world use. The remaining specs haven’t changed much compared to other models and the previous generation. So there’s not much else to say, but the new portrait feature is intriguing.

How Much Does the iPhone 17e Cost

In the US, the iPhone 17e starts at $599 (approximately 46,500 rubles) — exactly the same as the iPhone 16e at launch. Pre-orders open on March 4, and sales begin on March 11, 2026. The new model will be available in three colors: white, black, and the new Soft Pink.

Prices in Russia are hard to predict for now, but for comparison, the iPhone 16e currently goes for around 50,000 rubles. Given that the base price hasn’t changed with the new model’s release, you can expect the new device to cost roughly the same in Russia. A slight increase is possible, but it’s unlikely to be significant. However, at launch the price will definitely be higher before gradually coming down.

One question remains open — the amount of RAM. Most likely, the new model will get 8 GB, like the iPhone 16e and the standard iPhone 17, but there has been no official confirmation yet. The answer should come from the next beta version of Xcode 26.4. Or you can simply wait for the smartphone to hit the mass market.
